Treatment Based On The Degree Of Scoliosis
Because every person with scoliosis needs to be addressed uniquely, we don’t have cookie-cutter care plans. We do have the following guidelines, however:
- If the curvature is less than 10–15 degrees, a child may be put in the observation category. Sometimes treatment is recommended based on family history or recent rapid growth.
- If the curvature exceeds 15 degrees, we will provide highly specific exercises, traction, and home care. Bracing may be necessary as a case-by-case assessment.
When clinically indicated, we follow up with films and take measurements. As the curve increases, so does treatment and the need for customized care. We can measure the progression of skeletal growth with the use of Risser’s sign, which is a radiographic indicator of skeletal maturity.
Depending on where the child is with Risser and the measurement of the curve, their scoliosis may require more aggressive and different types of care, such as bracing.
How Our Chiropractor Services Work
At Highlands Family Chiropractic, our chiropractic services for scoliosis begin with an in-depth consultation and thorough examination. This allows us to understand your history, symptoms, and goals for treatment. Once we have an understanding of your unique condition, we devise a tailored treatment plan that may involve specific chiropractic adjustments, exercise recommendations, and lifestyle advice.
Our scoliosis treatments typically involve a series of chiropractic adjustments focused on improving spinal alignment and reducing nerve pressure. These adjustments can be performed manually by our trained chiropractors, or sometimes, with the aid of specialized equipment.
Concurrently, we offer guidance on exercises that strengthen the musculature supporting the spine, contributing to better posture and mobility.
Primary care doctors often will take a wait-and-see approach with scoliosis, which can develop very rapidly in just a few months. A medical doctor who detects any sort of small curves, either on an X-ray or another method, may say, “Let’s follow up in six months.”
We believe patients with scoliosis should be followed up much more frequently with someone who specializes in looking in greater detail. Why? Because we’ve seen very rapid progression with patients.
We recommend follow-up every three months due to the rapid growth of children. We have seen curves triple in degree in as little as three months.
