Natural Help for Hunchback

Published on December 18, 2023

As we age in life we tend to lose height. This is always an abnormal finding even though it is common. Consider this Common vs. Normal analogy: diabetes is common, but it’s never normal. One of the conditions that cause people to lose height is thoracic hyperkyphosis (hunchback).

What Causes It?

In many cases, thoracic hyperkyphosis is caused by poor posture. Years of hunching your back can cause the body to alter the way the vertebrae sit atop one another—leading to stretching of soft tissues and a resting position that is hunched versus upright. Not all cases of kyphosis are due to poor posture, however.

Some people are born with thoracic hyperkyphosis. Others develop the condition following trauma or as a result of disease. One of the most common diseases that result in kyphosis is Scheuermann’s disease. Those with this progressive condition increase the possibility of the following:

  • Fractures
  • Balance problems
  • Decreased lung capacity
  • Pain and disability as we age

Thoracic hyperkyphosis also can be a predictor of the need for assisted living as we age. It is also a predictor of early death. The good news is that through chiropractic care we can address this condition.

Identification Is Straightforward

If you’re wondering if you have thoracic hyperkyphosis, making a diagnosis is simple. Dr. Hicks will perform a postural examination and digital X-rays will be taken to confirm this diagnosis within minutes.

Additional orthopedic and neurological testing can be done to identify symptoms that may be associated with the condition. This can be shortness of breath, fatigue, pain with flexion or extension, and pain with sneezing, coughing, and many more.

An Array of Natural Treatment Options

There are multiple treatments for thoracic hyperkyphosis that correct posture and stop progression of the condition, but this type of care is only available at specially trained chiropractic clinics like Highlands Family Chiropractic.
